Thoreau was best known as a Naturalist, and his journals are filled with daily observations of the flora and fauna of Concord. He was also an Abolitionist and was involved with the Underground Railroad; his 1849 essay “Civil Disobedience” would influence Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in the 20th Century.
