Biography:
Lydia Maria Francis Child (1802-1880) was born in Medford, Massachusetts. From 1826-1834, she edited the Juvenile Miscellany, an important children's magazine of the day. At the age of 22, Maria wrote a novel, Hobomok, which launched a writing career that included fiction, domestic advice, and works to support the anti-slavery cause. Her American Frugal Housewife (1829) was the best-selling domestic book of its day.
